Become a Registered Game Official to be able to officiate the Ludington Gus Macker
In addition to our general call for volunteers, we’re also excited to launch the Gus Macker Student and Adult Ref Program. This initiative addresses the ongoing shortage of referees in high school and middle school sports throughout Michigan, a challenge not unfamiliar to the Ludington area. Athletic directors across the state can attest to the difficulties in finding qualified officials for sporting events.
Our program stands out as a pioneering approach in the state, aiming to prepare officials for the Gus Macker event who can also help fill the gaps in local sports officiating, rather than exacerbating the shortage.
PROGRAM DETAILS: Over the next six months, we will conduct three clinics at area schools, focusing on juniors, seniors, and adults. Our goal is to guide approximately 30 individuals through the MHSAA officials certification program, with local teaching and mentoring by MHSAA officials from the region. Participants in the program will receive numerous benefits:
- Instruction and mentorship from a registered MHSAA official.
- Officials training guides and testing materials.
- An official’s shirt and, upon passing their examination, a MHSAA patch.
- A high-quality official’s whistle.
- A $300 stipend for officiating at the Gus Macker weekend.
- The opportunity to win the new Ludington Gus Buster Award, which includes either a $1,000 scholarship or a $1,000 cash payout, determined by voting participants.
- The chance to connect with officials’ associations or work with athletic directors, potentially leading to more opportunities as a certified official.
This program is an incredible opportunity for those interested in sports officiating to gain valuable experience, earn certification, and make a positive impact in their community. If you’re passionate about sports and looking for a rewarding experience, we encourage you to join us in this innovative program.
